To properly install multiple operating systems on one computer, it is important to follow several rules. First, you need to install the systems in a specific order. Secondly, systems cannot be installed on the same hard disk partition.

Necessary

  • - OS distributions;
  • - Partition Magic

Instructions

Step 1

Save all important files and settings on a separate medium. Partitioning and subsequent formatting erases all data on the disk.

Step 2

Next, you need to partition and format the disk. Distributions of modern operating systems have their own utilities for disk partitioning. You can use the third-party program Partition Magic, which offers a convenient and functional interface for operations with hard drives.

Step 3

If you need to install Windows and Linux systems at the same time, then first install the system from Microsoft, otherwise you will have to additionally restore the overwritten Linux bootloader.

Step 4

For Windows, one NTFS partition is sufficient. Format the required hard disk space and install the OS.

Step 5

After the Windows installation is complete, install Linux, which has its own powerful disk partitioning tool. It will format the free space on its own and create the 3 necessary partitions of the corresponding file systems. After installation, a loader will appear (LILO or Grub, depending on the distribution family and its version). When the computer boots up, the operating system selection window will automatically start.

Step 6

To edit the OS selection idle time or menu order, you need to edit the bootloader file in Linux. To do this, open Terminal, enter the command "sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg". In the editor, swap the necessary blocks, carefully studying the syntax, not losing sight of a single parenthesis. Save the file. Loader edited.

Step 7

LILO is edited in a similar way, only the configuration file is located in the /etc/lilo.conf folder.
