MX records, or Mail Exchange records, are used to prioritize servers that receive a user's email. If the server with the lowest priority value is unavailable, mail messages are delivered to the next server after it.

Instructions

Step 1

If you have a permanent connection to the Internet and your own server, you may need to reconfigure the system to more conveniently manage mail clients, determine quotas for the size of mailboxes, change the interface used, etc. Part of this procedure is prescribing MX records. First of all, find out your IP address or the name of the domain you are using. Make sure the mail server has been successfully installed and is working correctly.

Step 2

Make sure there are no forward and reverse zone problems. To do this, use the ping command with your domain name and determine the IP address. After that, run the nslookup command on the found IP address and determine the name of the corresponding domain record. If the forward and reverse zone entries display correctly, delete the existing Mail Exchange entries.

Step 3

Write down the required MX records. To do this, specify the desired name (in most cases, this is mx. Or mail.) And the IP address that works with mail messages. This is necessary to select the address to which all mail servers will contact when sending mail. If this address cannot be used, the domain name will be used. So, the default values of MX records are:

- mx1.domain_name.com;

- relay. domain_name.com.

After changing these values will take the form:

- mail1.domain_name.com;

- mail2.domain_name.com.

Step 4

The final step is to change your mail configuration settings. To do this, write the name of the mail server for sending emails in the SMTP settings and get yourself a domain. Add the required users and check the functionality of the created configuration.
