Working on his computer, the user usually knows well both the operating system installed on it and the file system it uses. But you have to sit down at someone else's computer and there are some problems in the system, it may be necessary to determine the type of file system.

Instructions

Step 1

The file system determines the way of organizing and storing data on various storage media, including hard drives. There are many different file systems, the most common are: FAT16, FAT32, NTFS for Windows operating systems; ext2 and ext3 for Unix systems and in particular for the Linux operating system.

Step 2

You can find out the type of the file system in different ways. The simplest: open "My Computer", select the drive you are interested in, right-click on it and select "Properties" from the menu. In the window that opens, the top will indicate the type of disk and the file system used. For example, for Windows XP and Windows 7, the file system type will be NTFS.

Step 3

In the event that you see an inoperative computer that refuses to boot, you can view information about its disks using the Acronis Dick Director program. It runs directly from the CD, to select boot from the disk, press F12 after starting, you will see a window for choosing a boot device. On some computers, the boot window can be invoked with other keys.

Step 4

Select boot from CD and press Enter. In the disc menu that appears, select Acronis Dick Director. After loading, the program window will open, in which you will see all the disks of the computer and their partitions, indicating the used file systems. Acronis Dick Director is a very handy utility that allows you to partition disks in the desired way and format them in the required file system. It also allows you to recover disk partitions with a high degree of probability after their accidental loss - you can recover disks with all folders and files.

Step 5

There is a version of the Acronis Dick Director program that runs under Windows, in which you can also view all the information on file systems. But it is not recommended to carry out any operations with disks in this version - after rebooting the system, the risk is quite high that the computer will refuse to boot at all. If you need to partition the disc, use the CD version, it is very reliable.
