Instructions

Step 1

On an empty desktop, you can display basic shortcuts such as "My Computer", "Trash", "My Documents", "Network Neighborhood". To do this, go to the properties of the desktop. Select the Desktop tab and click the Customize Desktop button. Select the shortcuts shown at the top of the window with the checkboxes. Confirm your selection with the OK button.

Step 2

Add shortcuts to the programs you need most. Go to the "Start" button menu and open the "All Programs" drop-down list. After selecting the required program, click on its icon with the right mouse button and click on the words "Send to Desktop". After that, the operating system will not send the program itself, but only its shortcut. The same can be done by holding down the left button on the program name and dragging the icon onto the desktop field.

Step 3

If you need quick access to certain files or folders, make shortcuts for them. Call the context menu of the file and select the words "Create shortcut". A shortcut icon appears next to the file. You can copy it to your desktop.

Step 4

To put things in order on the desktop, there is a context menu function "Sort". It can be used to organize shortcuts by size, alphabet, file modification date, and file type.

Step 5

Do you think the icons are too small? Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and roll the mouse wheel. Thanks to this action, you can adjust the size of the labels however you like.

Step 6

In order to change the picture of a shortcut, you need to go to its properties and work with the "Change icon" button. You can use both standard shortcut icons and those downloaded from the Internet.

Step 7

Renaming a shortcut is easy enough. Select it with the left mouse button and press F2. The name field will become editable. Type a name and press Enter. The new name will replace the old one.

Step 8

If you changed the shortcuts on the desktop, but the changes were not displayed, click the "Refresh" item in the context menu of the desktop.
