The Windows Registry, actually being a hierarchical database, is an integral and important part of this operating system. It stores configuration data for most applications, components, and subsystems. For manual transfer of settings or for backup purposes, you may need to make a registry file containing a copy of data from one of its branches or the entire registry.

Step 1
Open the application launcher dialog. To do this, click on the "Start" button located on the taskbar. Then click on the "Run" item in the menu that appears.
If the menu displayed after clicking the "Start" button does not contain a "Run" item, add it. Right-click on the "Start" button and select "Properties" from the context menu. In the dialog that appears, go to the "Start Menu" tab. Click the "Configure …" button. Another dialog will be displayed. In the Advanced Start Menu Options list of this dialog, select the Show Run Command check box. Click OK on both open dialogs.
Step 2
Start Windows Registry Editor. In the "Run Program" dialog in the "Open" field, enter the line regedit. Click OK.

Locate the registry key from which the registry file will be generated. If you know exactly the path to the registry key, navigate to it by sequentially expanding the tree branches corresponding to the parent keys. To expand the registry branch, click on the cross icon to the left of the text label of the branch item.
If you know only the name of the section, or the names and values of the parameters it contains, search the registry. Select "Edit" and "Find" from the menu, or press Ctrl + F. Enter your search criteria in the dialog that appears. Click the Find Next button. Press the F3 button to continue searching if the wrong section was found.
Step 4
Start exporting data from the registry. Select the item corresponding to the section, the data from which will be placed in the registry file. Right-click on the element and select the "Export" item in the context menu, or use the "Export …" item in the "File" menu.
Step 5
Make a registry file. In the displayed "Export Registry File" dialog box, select the directory and name of the file to be created. Click on the "File type" drop-down list. Select Registry Files (*.reg) if you want to create a text-format file with instructions for Registry Editor. Select "Registry hive files (*. *)" If you want to get a binary file. Click the Save button.
