The need to restore the operating system Windows version Vista is usually caused by installing a second OS version of XP. This is because the XP boot loader erases the Vista boot loader. Boot loader recovery can be performed using standard tools of the system itself.
Instructions
Step 1
Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into the drive and boot the system. Enter the Windows Setup command in the Windows Boot Manager dialog box and confirm the selected action by pressing the Enter function key. Wait until the installation files are downloaded to the computer's RAM and the regional settings dialog box appears. Indicate the desired one and confirm your choice by clicking the "Next" button.
Step 2
Use the System Restore command in the next dialog box and specify the Vista version as the OS in the new dialog box. Confirm the saving of the changes made by clicking the "Next" button and select the "Command line" option in the last dialog box.
Step 3
Type drive_name: / boot / bootsect / nt60 All in the Windows command interpreter text box and confirm the action by pressing the Enter function key. This will restore the Vista bootloader. Enter the command exit in the command line utility and press the Enter key again to exit the program.
Step 4
Use the Reboot command in the System Recovery Options dialog box to apply the changes and load the correct operating system.

Another method to repair the Windows Vista boot loader is to use the bcdedit.exe utility. To do this, download the utility to your computer and save it in a separate directory on the non-system volume. Open the command interpreter again and type drive_name: followed by cdbootfix in the command prompt text box. Enter the command drive_name: / bootfix / bootsect.exe / NT60 All and confirm the selected action by pressing the Enter function key.

If you cannot use the installation disk, it is recommended to use the specialized utility FixbootFull, designed to restore the boot record and Windows Vista codes and change the dual boot parameters of operating systems.
