Virtual memory in Windows combines random access memory and dedicated hard disk space where the system unloads data from RAM. At the same time, tasks with a higher priority are loaded into RAM.
Instructions
Step 1
The place on the hard disk where data is uploaded is called the paging file. There are two ways to add virtual memory: increase RAM or increase the paging file. To maximize system performance and avoid possible problems associated with device incompatibility, it is better to choose additional memory of the same model that is installed in your system unit. Download the free PC-Wizard software from the developer's site and run it.
Step 2
In the "Hardware" section, click on the motherboard icon, and on the right side of the screen - on the "Physical memory" line. In the "Information" section, the program will display information about the type and manufacturer of RAM, as well as the number of memory slots and installed modules. If your motherboard has free slots, install additional memory modules, otherwise replace the old lines of RAM with new ones of higher capacity.
Step 3
System performance is noticeably slower if there is not enough space on the hard disk for the paging file. Its recommended maximum size should be 1.5-2 times the amount of RAM. By default, the paging file is located on the system disk. Frequent system access to virtual memory also slows down performance. Therefore, it is better to move the paging file to a logical disk.
Step 4
If your computer is running Windows 7, press Ctrl + Esc, click on the “My Computer” icon and select “Properties”. On the left side of the screen, click the "Advanced system settings" link. In the system properties window go to the "Advanced" tab and in the "Performance" section click "Options". In the new window, in the "Advanced" tab in the "Virtual memory" section, click "Change".
Step 5
Check the C drive, select the state "No paging file" and click "Set". Answer “Yes” to the system's question about the continuation. Then mark any logical drive, for example D, and choose "Specify size". The minimum size of the paging file must be no less than the amount of RAM, the maximum must exceed it by 1.5-2 times. Click "Set". Restart your computer if required.
Step 6
If you have Windows XP installed, right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. In the "Advanced" tab in the "Performance" section, click "Options", then proceed as described above.
