Encrypted data on a USB stick is very convenient. No one will be able to see what he is not supposed to see. The loss of the carrier will not cause concern. But it happens that the password is not written down, and it is not always possible to keep all passwords in memory if you do not use them often. How to unlock the flash drive if the password is forgotten, but there is no record or is lost?
Necessary
Personal computer, flash drive
Instructions
Step 1
When creating a password using the Bitlocker function, which is available in Windows Vista or Windows 7, one of the instructions will recommend saving the recovery key in two ways: print the key, or save it in a specific file.
Step 2
To unlock the USB flash drive, you must use the previously saved recovery key. To do this, take a printout with a key or a disk with a saved file. That is, you must find the key that was previously used in the system for this operation.
Step 3
Right-click on the flash drive icon in My Computer. In the dialog box that appears, select the option: "Unlock disk". In the new window, enter manually the recovery key. It can be copied if the key is saved on another electronic medium.
Step 4
After the key is entered or copied, click on the "Finish" tab. But the unlocking process is not over, since the flash drive is temporarily unlocked and when it is removed from the computer, the lock will turn on again. Therefore, follow the further prompts of the system and change the password.
Step 5
In the dialog box, select the "Manage Bitlocker" option. A list of actions that you can take will appear. Change the forgotten password to a new one to permanently unlock the electronic medium. Remember to save your recovery key just in case of emergency. Here you can delete the password, but this is only in the case of using both a password and a smart card. As you can see, there is nothing complicated in this process. The main thing is to save the recovery key to a computer or other portable device while encrypting a flash drive.
