Having hardly found a file with a movie on the Internet that you have long wanted to review, you may find that the program with which you opened this file does not play sound. To cope with this nuisance, you will need to find out what codec the audio track was compressed with and install the missing component on your computer.
Necessary
- - video file;
- - GSpot program;
- - VideoInspector program;
- - browser.
Instructions
Step 1
A number of players have an option to search for missing codecs on the Internet. If the program with which you tried to open the file does not have this opportunity, all is not lost. The GSpot utility can help determine the name of the codec that was used to compress the audio track.
Step 2
Open the GSpot window and click on the browse button in the File panel. Select a movie file that is played without sound and click the "Open" button. It may take a few seconds for the program to extract information from the file.
Step 3
Pay attention to the contents of the Audio panel, which is located in the lower left part of the GSpot window. The Codec field will display the name of the codec used for audio compression, and the Stat field will display a message about the absence of the required codec in the system.
Step 4
Highlight the full codec name in the text field and copy it. Open the page of one of the search services in a browser and insert the name of the missing codec into the search box.
Step 5
To search, you can use the site free-codecs.com. Open its main page in a browser tab and enter the codec name into the search box located in the upper right corner of the window. Start the search with the Enter key.
Step 6
Follow the text link that appears in the search results. Simple instructions for installing the codec can be seen under the download link. As a rule, for this you need to select a file with the inf extension among the loaded data and apply the Install option of the context menu to it.
Step 7
Download the codec using the link and install it as described in the explanation.
Step 8
To identify and search for the missing codec, you can use the VideoInspector program. Open the video file in it using the "Browse" button. Sound compression information will be displayed in the lower pane of the program window.
Step 9
If there is no codec that compressed audio in the file, click the Load button in the Codec field of the Audio panel.
