The file extension is used to define a system of data parameters that can be read by a particular program. Replacing the extension will affect the course of further operations with the file, so this procedure should be performed only when necessary.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu. Select "Folder Options". In the window that opens on the screen, go to the appearance settings tab. Scroll through the list of positions to the very end.
Step 2
Uncheck Hide Extensions for Registered File Types. Apply the changes, close the window by clicking the "OK" button. Reboot the system if required. After that, the names of all files on the computer will also contain an extension, so in the future, be careful when renaming them, so as not to accidentally change the parameters.
Step 3
Find the file on your computer whose resolution you want to change. Click on it with the right mouse button, select the "Rename" menu item.
Step 4
Erase all characters that follow the period from the file name. Put the extension you want and press Enter. The system will display a warning that changing the file extension may affect further work with it, click OK. If a program for reading data of a new format was installed on your computer, the icon will change to the corresponding application. If you enter the name extension incorrectly, then the file will appear as unregistered.
Step 5
If you need not just to change the file extension, but to convert it, then download and install any programs convenient for you that change the data parameters. For example, if you need to convert a.docx file to.txt, open it with Microsoft Office Word and select Save.
Step 6
In the drop-down menu at the bottom, put the txt extension and the system will perform the necessary transformations. There are also various special conversion programs specially designed for certain types of files.
