If it seems to you that this scary word means something incredibly complex and far from you, then you are mistaken. BIOS (BIOS) is in every computer and without it you would not be able to use your PC.
Every computer user has come across BIOS, but not everyone realized that they saw and used it. Remember, when you turn on your computer or laptop, at the beginning of this process you see a screen at the bottom of which it says something like "press Del (or F2) to enter BIOS". If the user presses the button indicated in the prompt, the computer hardware control interface opens.
The word BIOS is translated from English as basic input / output system - "basic input-output system"). BIOS as computer software is located in a separate microcircuit installed on the motherboard. This microcircuit, if necessary, can be reprogrammed (flashing the BIOS), but if an incompetent, ignorant person does it or does it incorrectly, then the computer will be impossible to use. But unsuccessful settings made in the BIOS management interface can often be reset by returning to the factory (default).
Why you need a BIOS:
1. When the computer boots up, it checks the presence of the main equipment and its operability. If, for example, RAM, processor or other device necessary for the operation of the PC "burned out", the BIOS will give a signal with a special sound (for each component, the set of signals will be different).
2. The BIOS loads the bootloader, which in turn loads the OS.
3. BIOS allows the OS to communicate with peripheral hardware.
4. BIOS allows you to configure many hardware components, monitor their status, operating parameters. The settings made by the user are saved there, for example, the current date and time, allows you to turn on / off the equipment built into the motherboard, for example, a sound or network card.
