Recently, more and more videos in mkv format have appeared on the network. In fact, mkv is not a separate file, but a special Matroska multimedia container containing a video track, audio track, subtitles and auxiliary information. Instructions
Step 1
First you need to install a set of codecs Сombined Сodeck Рack (CCCP). The package contains the minimum set of codecs required to view video recordings of most well-known formats, including playback of mkv files. Step 2
If you need a more powerful and expanded set of codecs, you should opt for the K-LITE CODEC PACK. Compared to CCCP, it takes up more hard disk space and requires additional configuration. In order to play the mkv file, you also need Media Player Classic. It is also distributed absolutely free of charge and is available for download on the official website of the developer. Install the player following the instructions on the screen.
Step 4
To change the configuration of the mkv file (create a menu, change the language, enable / disable subtitles, etc.) you need the Matroska Splitter program. It opens mkv files and allows you to replace one or another part of it. The program can be downloaded from the official website of the developers.

After installing the above programs, run the mkv file and enjoy watching high quality video.
