To save time and space, many keyboards and notebook manufacturers make multifunction keys: when certain commands are combined, the same button can perform different functions. Sometimes a person forgets to switch the keyboard layout and spends his time typing the wrong text. Therefore, it is often necessary to disable additional key functions.

Step 1
A standard computer keyboard includes two possibilities for dialing numbers: in the top row of the main keyboard (along with punctuation marks) and an additional, small keyboard - it is on the right and looks separate from the main composition of the keys. The small keyboard is analogous to a calculator, since the buttons on it are arranged in the same order as in a calculating machine. An additional keyboard is a godsend for accountants and other workers whose profession is related to numbers. The additional keyboard is easy to use and enables "blind" typing: you can read without checking the keyboard, without being distracted from the main text. To turn the optional numeric keypad on or off, press the Num Lock key. If a special light comes on when you press a key on the keyboard panel, then the numeric dialing feature is enabled.

Most modern laptops and netbooks are focused on mobility and transport comfort, so their keyboards are significantly smaller than in standard computers. In this case, the laptop does not have a small additional keyboard and numbers are typed on the main key panel by pressing additional buttons. You can determine this function by looking closely at the key labels. If, along with English and Russian letters, you see numbers on the keys, then this is your numeric keypad. To activate or, conversely, disable the function of dialing numbers, press the "Num Lock" key. If, when typing letters on such a keyboard, you need to use a numeric designation, press and hold the "Fn" key and simultaneously press the required number. The same can be done by pressing and holding the Shift key.
