When installing a home computer network or trying to increase the bandwidth of an Internet connection, you have to interconnect modems. This is not a difficult matter, but it requires knowledge of certain techniques and some specific computer skills.

Instructions

Step 1

You can connect two modems to each other with a direct telephone cable:

Set the following parameters on the DIP - switches:

Defiant:

OFF: 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10

ON: 1, 3, 5, 8

Responder:

OFF: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10

ON: 3, 8

Step 2

Create a connection in HyperTerminal, in the "connection" option select "Direct COM # connection" - to which your modem is connected.

Step 3

Now set the speed of the COM-port itself. The speed must be equal to or greater than the speed of the intended Internet connection. Leave the rest of the parameters unchanged. Repeat these settings on the second modem. It is better that both modems are identical and support the same speed.

Step 4

Next in HyperTerminal enter this initialization string:

Caller: at & b1 & s0 & h1s0 =

0 & a3s7 = 60 × 7 & c1s39 = 0 & l1 & N16 &

U16.

Responder: at & b1 & s0 & h1s0 =

1 & a3s7 = 60 × 7 & c1s39 = 0 & l1 & N16 &

U16.

After you enter these lines, the modem should "pick up the phone" and start dialing to the second modem.

Step 5

Type the ATA command in order to check if there is another modem on the other end of the wire, if the modem starts emitting a "trill", then there is something on the other end of the wire, in the worst case, a sound resembling a regular beep will be heard. If the connection is broken, the modems will connect again automatically.
