Entering an administrator password is a standard procedure in the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and is required to authorize many operations. Using the built-in administrator account allows you to reset the administrator password and change the accounts of other users if necessary data is lost.
Instructions
Step 1
Restart your computer and press the F8 function key to reset and edit the lost administrator password.
Step 2
Specify the "Safe Mode" option in the "Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu" that opens and use the built-in Administrator account, which by default does not have password protection.
Step 3
Confirm the safe boot mode of the operating system by clicking the "Yes" button in the system request window that opens and call the main menu by clicking the "Start" button.
Step 4
Go to Control Panel and select the User Accounts node.
Step 5
Specify the account to be edited and use the "Change password" option in the command directory of the left pane of the application window.
Step 6
Do not specify any values in the line "Change password for user_name" to cancel protection, or enter the value of the desired password to create a new password protection and confirm the execution of the command by clicking the "Change password" button.
Step 7
Close all open applications and restart your computer to apply the selected changes.
Step 8
Return to the main Start menu to perform an alternative reset operation and edit the lost administrator password and go to Run.
Step 9
Enter the value cmd in the "Open" field and confirm the execution of the command for launching the "Command Line" tool by clicking OK.
Step 10
Specify the value control userpasswords2 in the command interpreter test field and confirm your choice by pressing the Enter function key.
Step 11
Specify the account to be edited in the opened accounts dialog box and uncheck the "Require username and password" box to cancel password protection, or select the "Change password" option in the "User password" group to change the password value.
Step 12
Enter the desired value for the new password in the next dialog box and confirm your choice by clicking the OK button.
Step 13
Enter the value of the created password in the "Automatic login" window that opens and click the OK button to confirm the command execution.
Step 14
Specify exit in the command interpreter text box and confirm the end of the command line by pressing the Enter function key.
Step 15
Restart the computer to apply the selected changes and log on with the new administrator password.
