Almost all applications and most of the system programs today use elements of the graphical interface of the OS. Therefore, to stop the application working in the normal window mode, just click on the icon with a cross in the upper right corner of the window. However, sometimes this is not enough or it is not possible to use this method.

Instructions

Step 1

Some applications are configured in such a way that clicking on the icon with a cross does not close the program, but only minimizes its window. If you are not sure that you have terminated the application in this way, look for its icon in the tray and close the program completely using the corresponding item in the icon's context menu - it opens by right-clicking on the object.

Step 2

A program that works in full screen mode and does not have a window with a cross in the upper right corner can be closed using the "hot keys". Use the keyboard shortcut alt="Image" + F4 instead of clicking the close window icon to quit, for example, a full-screen computer game.

Step 3

Use Windows Task Manager to "crash" programs. If you cannot close the application in the usual way, press the key combination Ctrl + alt="Image" + Delete. In some versions of the OS - for example, Windows XP - this is enough for the manager window to appear on the screen, in others - for example, Windows 7 - you need to click on the line "Start Task Manager" in the intermediate menu.

Step 4

On the Applications tab in the dispatcher window, find the line of the required program in the table. For “frozen” applications, the “Not responding” mark is placed in the “Status” column of this table instead of “Running”. Highlight the program line and click the End task button.

Step 5

If the program you are looking for is not listed, go to the Processes tab. Here is a similar list, but instead of the names of programs, the left column - "Image name" - contains the names of executable files. This complicates the search a little, but in the right column - "Description" - there is a short explanation of the purpose of each application or its full name. Using the data in these two columns, find the program you need, select its row in the table and click the "End Process" button.
