Advertising on the Internet is no less intrusive than on TV / radio. One of the extremes of not-so-conscientious Internet advertisers is unwanted pop-ups that either pop into the foreground without asking, or hide behind the page we open. But unlike television and radio broadcasting, on the Internet we have the opportunity to at least try to get rid of the extreme manifestations of advertising lawlessness. And strangely enough, here we find quite powerful allies - browser makers!
Instructions
Step 1
Opera was the first of the popular browsers to provide the ability to block unsolicited windows, so let's start with it. In the latest version of the browser, the corresponding settings are located in the main menu, in the "Quick settings" subsection of the "Settings" section. Four options are offered: two radical (allow all / deny all) and two more flexible ones - open pop-up windows in the background and not open windows if they have not been requested by the user.
Step 2
In addition, there is a possibility of more fine-tuning the clipping of unnecessary ads. If you right-click on an empty space on a page of a site and select the "Site settings" item in the menu, a window will appear in which you can set your personal display settings for this particular site. Now we are interested in the "General" tab, where in the drop-down list you can choose from the same three options to instruct the browser how to deal with the pop-up windows of this particular site.
Step 3
There are other even more subtle settings for filtering the content of HTML pages. They can be found in the "Scripts" tab, but such settings already require some understanding of the structure of pages, HTML and JavaScript languages.
Step 4
In the Mozilla FireFox browser, the path to the setting that includes the pop-up blocking option is through the "Tools" section in the top menu. In it, you need to select the "Settings" item to open the settings window, in which we are interested in the "Content" tab. On it, you should put a checkmark in front of the inscription "Block pop-up windows". And you can add or remove a site to the list of exceptions to this rule by clicking the "Exceptions" button.
Step 5
In Internet Explorer, the pop-up blocker option is located in the Tools section of the top menu. There is also an item that opens the Pop-up Blocking Options window. In it, in addition to editing the list of sites that are exceptions to the general rule, you can set one of three levels of filtering pop-up windows. Here, in addition, it is possible to enable / disable sound and text notification about each locked window.
Step 6
There is another way to this setting - in the "Tools" section of the top menu, click "Internet Options". In the window that opens, on the "Privacy" tab, check the box next to "Enable pop-up blocking". Here you can use the "Options" button to open the "Pop-up Blocker Options" dialog box.
Step 7
Unfortunately, the fight against pop-up windows is developing according to the same scenario as the fight against Internet viruses. That is, when a way is found to fight viruses using one technology, virus builders develop another. And here this process is complicated by the fact that pop-ups are used not only to the detriment, but also for the convenience of users.
