When working with bitmaps, it may be necessary to select objects. Photoshop allows you to do this in a variety of ways. Objects can be simple or complex, so there are different approaches to highlighting them.

Adobe Photoshop, bitmap
Instructions
Step 1
One of the most common ways to select objects is with a Quick Mask. Working with it, you can draw the desired selection area. First, make the layer with the image normal, not the background. This is done by double clicking on a layer in the layers palette. Then click File -> Save as and save the file with the Psd extension. It is best to keep the original file intact. Then find on the side toolbar the button marked with a dotted circle. By clicking it, you will be taken directly to the properties of the quick mask, where you can edit its opacity and color. When the necessary parameters are set, you can start working in the quick mask mode.
Step 2
While in this mode, use the painting tools (brush, airbrush, etc.) to paint what is called a "quick mask" on the picture. Feel free to draw directly on the image, in fact, this is a selection. If the mask you draw extends beyond the selection, erase it with the Eraser tool. Experiment - use a brush with hard and soft edges, choosing whichever works best
Step 3
When you're done painting over the object, click Exit Quick Mask to exit this mode. A selection will appear in place of the mask. The background will be highlighted together with the object. It's not scary. Enter Select and click Inverse. After this manipulation, only objects will be selected
Step 4
Use the following technique to select complex objects with many small details. This is called threshold level adjustment. Double-click to make the background layer as normal. Then drag it with the mouse to the New Layer button to duplicate. Select the top new layer to work. Open the menu Image -> Adjust -> Threshold and move the slider left and right, evaluating the effect. Make the people black and the background white. When you got the desired result, click "OK"
Step 5
Rename the layer to Threshold by clicking the right mouse button. Select the magic wand tool and select the black silhouettes of people. Remember to turn off the Contiguous option and set the Tolerance option to a low value. This will select all the black pixels.
Step 6
When the selection in the Threshold layer is made, you need to transfer it to the original. Click on the eye icon in the layer palette and make this layer invisible. A selection has appeared around the silhouettes of people. Select the original layer on the palette and click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the palette. What was done is now a layer mask.
