The desktop can contain various elements - application shortcuts created automatically by the system or the Setup Wizard, as well as files and folders that the user has placed himself. Items can be deleted or restored to the desktop at any time.

Instructions

Step 1

The principle of deleting desktop elements is not much different from deleting any other file, but there are some differences. When sending an item to the trash can, keep in mind the following: if the icon you have chosen is a shortcut (it has a characteristic arrow in the lower left corner), its removal will not affect the program or folder that it launched or opened in any way. If the file was created directly on the desktop, then it will be deleted, and not the link to it.

Step 2

Move the cursor over the icon you want to remove and right-click on it. In the context menu, select the "Delete" item. Answer in the affirmative to the system request to confirm the deletion. The item will be moved to the trash. Another option: select the element, press the Delete key on the keyboard, confirm the deletion with the OK button or the Enter key.

Step 3

Desktop elements such as My Documents, My Computer, and My Network Places can be removed in another way. These elements are created automatically when the operating system is installed; they are shortcuts to resources, while the resources themselves are located on the system disk.

Step 4

Right-click on any free space on the desktop and select Properties from the context menu. The Properties: Display dialog box will open. You can call it in another way: open the "Control Panel" through the "Start" menu, in the "Appearance and Themes" category, select the "Display" icon by clicking on it with the left mouse button.

Step 5

In the "Properties: Display" dialog box, go to the "Desktop" tab and click on the "Desktop Settings" button. This action will bring up an additional window "Desktop Elements". In the "Desktop Icons" group, remove the marker from those elements that you do not need, and click the OK button. Apply the new settings and close the window. You can restore these items in the future in the same way.
