When there is a lack of physical memory, the operating system uses a reserve - virtual memory. The so-called paging file is filled with unused program libraries that cannot fit in system memory.

Instructions

Step 1

For the system to work correctly, it is necessary to correctly configure the ratio "RAM - virtual memory". It is possible to use the virtual reserve only after it is enabled. By default, this option automatically becomes active at the first system request, although the size may be minimal.

Step 2

The paging file is always located on the hard disk. It is recommended to place this reserve on the system disk, because the access speed will be much higher. Do not forget that the speed of access to files on the hard disk is several times lower than in a similar situation with RAM.

Step 3

The paging file is configured through the System Properties applet, which can be launched from the Start menu or the My Computer icon. Click the Start menu and select Control Panel. In the window that opens, double-click on the "System" icon. To call the "System Properties" from the desktop, you must right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".

Step 4

In the window that appears, click on the "Advanced" tab. Go to the "Performance" block and click "Options". Select the "Advanced" tab. Click the "Change" button to edit the paging file settings.

Step 5

View the system-set values. It is recommended to set the amount of allocated memory according to the rule "2, 5". For the maximum memory size, you need to multiply the amount of real (RAM) memory by 2, 5, for the minimum size, multiply by 1, i.e. leave unchanged.

Step 6

After entering all the values, you must press the "Set" button, and then three times the OK button. If you do not know the amount of RAM, run the System Properties applet. At the bottom of the open window, you will see information about the computer, the RAM line displays the desired value. After making changes to the system settings, it is recommended that you restart your computer.
