Virtual memory is memory allocated from external storage devices to improve the speed of various applications. For the most part, the system provides as much virtual memory as is usually enough for the needs of the user. But virtual memory can be disabled. Now we will analyze how to enable it and configure it to suit your needs.

Instructions

Step 1

Open the properties of "My Computer" by clicking on the "Start" button, then on the "My Computer" icon with the right mouse button, then select "Properties". The system properties window will open. Click on the "Advanced" tab in the properties window. The advanced system setup options menu appears. In it, find the "Performance" tab. Then click on the "Options" button. You will see a window for adjusting the speed of your computer. In this window, go to the "Advanced" tab, in which find the "Virtual Memory" submenu. Finally click on the "Change" button. A new configuration window will open.

Step 2

Now the fun begins, namely, enabling and configuring the paging file.

You should see a window showing all your storage devices (hard drives, flash drives). Select the disk from which memory for virtual memory will be taken. It is better to choose the one with the largest volume. Further in the "Swap file size" tab, you will see three items that you can set:

- special size - you set the size of the virtual memory yourself;

- size at the choice of the system - the selection of memory is in automatic mode;

- no paging file - virtual memory is off.

Step 3

If you want to enable virtual memory, then the third item disappears immediately. The first two remain. It is better to choose the first one, since you can specify as much memory in it as you need. The recommended size of virtual memory will be indicated at the bottom of the window, do not pay attention to this, you can set more. But keep in mind the following: Too small amount of virtual memory will not speed up the system Too much virtual memory can slow down the system because it (the system) will constantly access the hard disk, which will affect performance. Set the optimal size by trial and error.

Step 4

When you specify the desired memory size, click on the "Set" button. Then go to OK. The system will inform you that the changes will take place only after reboot, click OK, or then restart your computer yourself.
