Step 1

If Windows XP (Professional or Home Edition), then most likely the background of the desktop does not change due to the fact that the program cannot recognize the format of the picture.
Step 2
You will need to change the image extension to the standard and most popular - jpeg. To do this, go to the "Start" menu, then "All Programs", "Accessories". In the list that appears, find the paint editor and launch it. Then open in this program the picture that you want to place on the desktop. You just need to save it in a new format. Click File, Save As. In the dialog box, change the file type from original to jpeg.
Step 3
After changing the extension, open the saved picture. Right-click on it and click Set as Desktop Background.

If the operating system Windows 7 Starter is installed on your computer, then you need to do it in a different way. Click the Start Menu, Run. Enter "regedit" at the command prompt. The registry editor will open in front of you. Then find HKEY_CURRENT_USER among the sections, and then open the Control Panel and click Desktop. Then there will be a Wallpaper section in the entries. In it, enter the path to your picture saved on your computer. Then close the registry editor.
