When creating collages, it is very often necessary to separate the subject from the background. In order to perform this operation, the object must be selected. The graphics editor Photoshop provides rich possibilities for solving this problem.

Instructions
Step 1
Open the image in “Photoshop”. To do this, select “Open” from the “File” menu or use the “Ctrl + O” hotkeys.
Step 2
In the palette "Tools" ("Tools") select the tool "Brush Tool" ("Brush") or use the "B" key.
Step 3
Switch to “Quick Mask” mode. To do this, click on the right of the two rectangles at the bottom of the “Tools” palette or press the “Q” key.
Step 4
Paint over the object you want to separate from the background by holding down the left mouse button. When working in Quick Mask mode, the areas to be painted are red. It is quite convenient to outline the edges of the selected object with a brush with a hardness of about 70%. Paint over the central part of the object with a brush with a hardness of 100%. It is more convenient to outline small details of the image with a small diameter brush. Brush parameters can be adjusted on the fly. This is done in the "Brush" panel, which is located at the top of the program window under the main menu. The Brush tool has two parameters: Master Diameter and Hardness. Both parameters can be adjusted by moving the sliders or by entering numeric values for the parameters in the boxes above the sliders.
Step 5
Exit the Quick Mask mode. To do this, click the left rectangle at the bottom of the “Tools” palette or the “Q” key.
Step 6
Invert the created selection. To do this, in the “Select” menu, select “Inverse” or use the hotkeys “Shift + Ctrl + I”.
Step 7
Make the image a layer. In the “Layers” palette, hover over the only available layer, right-click and select “Layer from background” from the pop-up menu that appears.
Step 8
Create a layer mask. Click on the “Add layer mask” button.
The subject is separated from the background.
