During the operation of the computer, various situations arise, including the need to change or reset the account password. The need to change your password in Ubuntu can be due to various reasons, and there are several ways to accomplish this.
Often the question arises before users - how to change the password in Ubuntu? This can be done in two ways - from the graphical interface or from the command line.
Change password using the GUI
To do this, you must click on the System -> Settings -> About me buttons, after which the corresponding window will open. Click on the "Change Password" tab.
In the password change window, enter the current password and click on the "Authentication" button. This will turn on the text field for entering new data. Enter your new password and click on the "Change password" button.
Change password from command line
Changing the account password is possible using the PASSWD command. This can be done following the example shown below.
Enter the following at the command line:
ramesh @ ramesh-desktop: ~ $ passwd
Then enter your current password and the new one twice. If you did everything correctly, you should see the following entry:
passwd: password updated successfully
If you want to change the password of another Ubuntu user, the command must be slightly modified. For example, for a JSmith user, it would look like this:
ramesh @ ramesh-desktop: ~ $ sudo passwd jsmith
After that, you should write a new password twice and wait for such a response from the system:
passwd: password updated successfully
Recover password in Ubuntu
Also, don't worry if you forget your password and can't log into Ubuntu on your computer. There is a very easy and quick way to reset your password using the recovery mode in the Grub menu. Follow these steps to change your password:
Start your computer. From the Grub menu that appears by default when you start your computer, select Advanced Ubuntu Job Options. In the window that appears, click on the "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.11.0-13 generic (recovery mode)" tab.
In the drop-down menu, select "Root - Drop to root shell prompt". The command line will now appear at the bottom of the screen. You should list all users on the computer by entering the ls / home command. Then enter the following: mount -rw -o remount /, then enter your username.
For example, if your login is ABC, the command line should look like this:
passwd abc
Then enter the new password twice. If everything is done correctly, you will receive a system response that the password was updated successfully. Now you can simply restart your computer and log into Ubuntu with your new password.
