If you need to format a memory card, but for some reason you are not able to do it using the device for which this card is intended, then you can format it using your computer. It is not only possible to perform this operation on it, but also to select additional formatting options, which is not always possible to do, for example, on a smartphone.

Necessary

  • - Computer with Windows OS;
  • - memory card.

Instructions

Step 1

First thing you need to do is connect your memory card to your computer. You can insert the memory card into a specific device, such as a camera or phone. Then connect this device to your computer with a USB cable. In addition, you can use a card reader, which, by the way, will be convenient.

Step 2

After the memory card is connected, go to "My Computer". Click on the map icon with the right mouse button. Then select "Format" in the context menu. In this window there will be a section "File system", next to which there will be an arrow. Click on this arrow with the left mouse button.

Step 3

A list of file systems that are available for your flash will appear. They can be different depending on the card. You will most likely find that your memory card can be formatted with the FAT32 or NTFS file system. The latter is preferred as it is much newer. Also, there are no restrictions on the size of the copied file. In the case of FAT32, you cannot copy a file larger than four gigabytes to flash memory. The choice of file system is yours.

Step 4

Select the desired file system, then in the "Formatting method" section, click on "Fast, anti-aliasing". Then click "Start". A notification will appear stating that formatting will erase all data on the memory card. Confirm the operation.

Step 5

This will begin the process of formatting your flash memory. Its duration depends on the file system you have installed and also on the type of memory card. Do not interrupt the process and do not remove the card, otherwise it may simply fail. At the end of the process, a message will appear stating that the formatting has been completed successfully. This completes the process of formatting the memory card. Now it can be disconnected from the computer.
