One way or another, we come across monitors throughout our lives. Movies, computer games, communication with friends and family through video communication - all this has become available. And along with them came new concepts, for example, the refresh rate of the screen.

The refresh rate also has other names: frame rate, refresh rate, frame rate. If you follow technical terms, then it is correct to call this process a scan with a frame rate of N Hertz. Agree that such a name is much longer, and therefore it is not particularly convenient to pronounce it.

History

For greater clarity, it is worth remembering the old televisions with a cathode ray tube. The frame rate was then 50-60 Hz. What does it mean? In one second, the screen shows 50-60 frames. If we consider this process from a technical point of view, then the electron beam, as it were, draws an image on the kinescope cover line by line. And in such cases, interlaced scanning is used. The image is transmitted in half frames, which consist of odd or even lines.

This makes the picture flicker. Flickering becomes more noticeable with a large screen diagonal due to the high sensitivity of peripheral vision.

When using the 100 Hz mode on TVs with picture tubes, frames are shown repeatedly. Accordingly, the frame rate is doubled and the flickering becomes imperceptible.

If the frames are repeated three times, then the frequency from the original (50-60 Hz) will increase three times and will be 150-180 Hz.

Modern TVs

LCD TVs are based on different physical principles. The features of their device are such that initially there is no flicker. And high frame rates have a different meaning. Modern LCD TVs are manufactured to reproduce, for example, high definition movies and serious graphics games. And then, if you show a dynamically changing image with a frequency of 50 Hz, then it will seem blurry, while the movements of rapidly moving objects will appear jerky.

And to prevent this from happening, manufacturers increase the frame rate. It is quite easy to double it up to 100 Hz for an LCD TV. The device, thanks to built-in algorithms, analyzes two consecutive frames and additionally creates one intermediate one, and then inserts it between the two initial frames. To increase the frequency further, you just need to insert additional intermediate frames.

In this case, it is important to take into account the response time of pixels, which need to have time to change their position at the required speed. If they do not keep pace with the change of the image, then the TV will not reach the declared frame rate.

Also, the screen refresh rate can be increased by flickering high frequency backlighting. However, the picture quality will be worse.

In addition to LCD TVs, there are also Plasma Panels, which switch pixel states much faster than LCD TVs. In this regard, plasma panels have no problem with blurry images.
