Windows installation disc and bootable Windows 98 diskette in case of problems

Instructions

Step 1

Carry out preparatory work before installation, i.e. check the hardware compatibility for your version of Windows, check your Windows installation documentation. Then create a partition on the hard drive and format it using the Fdisk or Format commands. Remember that at least 400 MB of free disk space is required to install the Windows distribution and its normal operation.

Step 2

Start installing the operating system. To get started, insert the Windows installation CD into your CD or DVD data drive.

Step 3

Turn on the computer and, pressing F8, start boot in command line mode (with support for reading data from the drive). If MS-DOS is not installed on your computer, or if you are having trouble starting the command line, create a Windows 98 boot disk with FAT32 support.

Step 4

Start SMARTdrive if it did not start automatically. To do this, in the command line, enter the path of the folder where it is located, and enter the smartdrv command, and then press the Enter key. If this program is not used, the Windows installation files will be copied to the hard drive at a very low speed.

Step 5

At the command prompt, type the command "drive:" and press Enter ("drive" is the drive letter that contains the Windows installation disc). Then enter "cd i386" and press Enter, and then enter "winnt", also pressing Enter. After these steps, Windows Setup will start.

Step 6

Enter the path to the installation files and start the installation process. Then follow the instructions that appear on the screen, for example, after copying the files to the hard drive, you will have to confirm the restart of the computer.

Step 7

Format the previously prepared partition in the desired file system, and then confirm the continuation of the installation. Next, another reboot is required, which will continue the Windows installation through the graphical user interface. You just have to follow the instructions of the installation wizard.
