The Windows Registry is a structured database that contains system settings information for each profile on a computer. Incorrect registry changes can lead to inoperability of the computer and the need to reinstall Windows.
Instructions
Step 1
If you want to edit the registry settings, first create a backup copy of the key that you are going to change. To do this, you need administrator rights. At the command prompt, type regedit to bring up the Registry Editor and click OK.
Step 2
In the registry tree, mark the section that you are going to change, and in the "File" menu select the "Export" command. This will create a register patch - a text file with the *.reg extension. In the File Name box, enter a name for this patch. By default, it is saved to the My Documents folder.
Step 3
There is another way to create a patch for a registry branch. Click on the selected folder with the right mouse button and select the "Export" line in the drop-down menu. Give the patch a name in the appropriate window and click Save.
Step 4
To restore the partition, double-click the *.reg file. Its contents will be added to the registry. There is another way: in the "File" menu, select the "Import" command and mark the desired file in the folder where it was saved.
Step 5
You can save sections from the command line. Enter the command reg save, for example: reg save HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE c: CopyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.hive
Step 6
To restore the registry key, use the reg restore command, for example reg restore HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE c: CopyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.hive
Step 7
You can use the built-in Windows tool, the Backup Wizard, to save the entire registry. Enter ntbackup at the command line. In the "Backup Wizard" window, click on the "Advanced Mode" link and open the "Backup" tab. In the "Archive media …" window, specify the folder where you will save the registry.
Step 8
In the list of objects, check the System State box and click "Archive". In the new window, use the "Advanced" button and uncheck the "Automatically archive …" item to speed up the process. Set the archive type to "Normal". Confirm by clicking OK and "Archive".
Step 9
To restore the registry from the archive, start the ntbackup process from the command line and in the "Backup program" window go to the "Restore and manage …" tab. In the list of objects, check the "System status" box. Specify the source of recovery and click "Recover".
Step 10
If you haven't backed up your registry, try using System Restore. Restart your computer in Safe Mode and select "Load Last Known Good Configuration". Enter the date closest to when the changes were made to the registry.
