The data packed into the archive takes up less space on the local disk of the computer, moreover, it is easier to send it to another user via the Internet. In order to compress the file as much as possible using the WinRAR archiver, you must select the correct settings.
Instructions
Step 1
Before zipping files into an archive, make sure that WinRAR is installed on your computer. When choosing files to archive, remember that text files are best compressed. Videos, music and images are only slightly reduced in size. To set the maximum compression size, in the archiver window, make the "General" tab active.
Step 2
In the Archive Format group, find the Compression Method field. Using the drop-down list, set the "Maximum" value by clicking on it with the left mouse button and press the OK button. The files will be packed into an archive with the selected compression settings.
Step 3
If necessary, you can refer to the compression parameters settings and set your own values. To do this, in the archiver window, make the "Advanced" tab active and click on the "Compression settings" button in the "NTFS Settings" group.
Step 4
A new dialog box will open in which you can assign suitable values for the compression of text, audio and full color graphics, select the main compression algorithm, and so on. If you are not sure if you have configured everything correctly, simply click on the "Default" button to restore the original values. In order to get more information about certain parameters, open the help service by clicking on the "Help" button.
Step 5
The very same adding files to the archive is carried out as follows: select those files and folders that should be packed, right-click on the selection and select one of the "Add to archive" commands from the drop-down menu.
Step 6
To add a new file to an existing archive and compress it as much as possible when compressing, open the RAR file and select Add file to archive from the Commands menu, or simply drag the icon of the required file into the program window. A new Archive Name and Settings dialog box will automatically open. Set the compression method "Maximum" for the new file in the same way as described above. Click on the OK button.
