Routers are devices that convert the wired Internet signal into radio waves. After purchasing a new router, some users find that the speed of connection and file downloads decreases significantly. This is due to the operation of the device itself and the settings that were made in its control panel.

To adjust the speed of your internet connection through your router, you will need to test the actual speed of your connection first. Connect your Internet cable to the computer's network card, the output of which is located on the back of the computer. Then go to a connection testing resource (for example, Speedtest.net or 2IP.ru) and check the speed of downloading files using the resource interface. After finishing testing, remember the received value and connect the cable back to the router.

Activate the Wi-Fi connection on the computer and use the same download speed test resource again. If the value obtained as a result of the second test is lower, then the router really affects the connection speed and "cuts" the traffic. If the obtained speed value remains approximately the same, the problem lies not with the device itself, but with the instability of the Internet connection as a whole.

To increase the speed of the Internet through a router, disconnect all devices connected via Wi-Fi from the wireless network. The fact is that the router begins to divide the connection speed if several devices are connected to it at once, which affects the speed of the Internet channel and the download of data.

Newer firmware versions will also increase the download speed. Go to the website of the manufacturer of your router in the "Downloads" section, where specify the used model of the device, and then select "Firmware". Download the latest available version from the website to your computer. After the download is complete, go to the control panel of your router and select the "Firmware update" section.

On the page that appears, specify the path to the downloaded file and wait for the firmware update and device reboot. If the operation was performed correctly, the connection speed may increase after a reboot. To check the effectiveness of the settings made, go to the connection speed test resource again and repeat the test performed earlier, and then compare the results.
Step 6
If you still cannot increase the connection speed, it is likely that the drop in connection speed is due to the type of connection used by your ISP. For example, a Wi-Fi connection becomes significantly slower if your ISP uses a secure VPN instead of DHCP. In this case, it will hardly be possible to increase the connection speed, and changing the provider will be an effective solution to the problem.
