The use of Roman numerals when writing ordinal numbers is due to a tradition that has survived in many countries, including Russia. Roman numerals are used to denote numbers of centuries or millennia, numbers of volumes of multivolume books (sometimes numbers of parts, chapters and sections of books), ordinal numbers of monarchs (Peter I, Nicholas II), important events (I Punic War, XXVII Summer Olympic Games) or points list (III law of thermodynamics). Roman numerals can be used to write any integer up to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). Fortunately, you do not need to memorize these numbers or search for ready-made tables and carefully retype complex sequences of Latin letters into your document. Using Microsoft Office tools, you can easily enter Roman numbers.
Instructions
Step 1
In order to enter a Roman number in a Word text document, press the key combination “Ctrl + F9”. Two curly braces, highlighted in gray, appear at the cursor location. Inside the brackets, enter the number you need (in Arabic numerals from 0 to 9) in the following form: "= number * Roman" (without quotes). Then press the F9 key again, and the Arabic numerals are converted to the desired Roman number.
Step 2
If you need to correct the entered Roman number, right-click on it. From the context menu that opens, select the "Field codes / values" command. The Roman number will revert back to the editable format "= number * Roman" in curly braces. Correct the number written in the usual Arabic numerals, and press the F9 key again to convert it to a Roman number. Changes applied.
Step 3
The Russian version of Microsoft Excel is also equipped with a similar function. This function is called ROMAN. To enter a Roman numeral, select an empty cell in the document and write the number in the following format: "= ROMAN (number)" (without quotes!), Where "number" is a number written in ordinary Arabic numerals. Then press the "Enter" key. Arabic numerals will be converted to Roman numerals.
Step 4
You can edit Roman numerals as follows. Click on the cell with the Roman numeral. The line "Insert function" (fx) will display the entry of this digit in the editable format "= ROMAN (number)". Just write the new number in Arabic numerals and press "Enter".
