To be able to change the screen resolution in Windows XP, you need to open the "Display Properties" window. The first option to do this is to launch the control panel in the "Settings" section of the main menu (the "Start" button), and in it, click the "Display" icon. The second is to right-click on the free space of open windows on the desktop and select the "Properties" item. In the screen properties you should go to the "Settings" tab and, by moving the left mouse button on the slider in the "Screen resolution" section, select the value you need … After you click "OK" (or "Apply"), the operating system will change the screen resolution to the one you specified and a window with a timer will appear. If the changes are not confirmed during the timer countdown, the operating system will return the previous screen resolution. Sometimes after installing a new OS, there are very few options in the list of available screen resolutions. As a rule, this happens because the video card and monitor drivers are not yet installed. That is, the operating system does not yet know the capabilities of the installed equipment and, out of caution, it only offers options that will probably be "tough" for any monitors and video cards. Therefore, you should not adjust the screen resolution until the installation of all the necessary software is completed. If, after that, the choice of resolutions remains minimal, you should click the "Advanced" button and install the missing drivers manually.

This procedure is almost the same in Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. You also need to right-click on the free space of the desktop and select "Screen Resolution" in the drop-down menu. As a result of this action, the settings section will open, located at Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Display -> Screen Resolution.
