During installation on a computer, application programs, as a rule, ask the question about the need to create shortcuts on the desktop - this is one of the ways to create icons in the most accessible place of the OS workspace. There are ways to "manually" display icons on the desktop - they can be applied to executable program files, document files, folders and other objects.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the shortcut wizard dialog. This can be done through the context menu that appears when you right-click on the background image of the desktop. In this menu, expand the "Create" section and select the second line - "Shortcut".
Step 2
Click the "Browse" button in the first form of the wizard. It opens a standard dialog box with which you need to find an object (program executable file, document or data file, folder, etc.) and click the "Open" button.
Step 3
Go to the next form - click on the "Next" button. Type the text that will become the caption under the shortcut picture and click the "Finish" button. A new icon will appear on the desktop immediately after this action.
Step 4
In another way, the same operation can be done using the Windows file manager - Explorer. Start it, for example, by double clicking on the "Computer" icon on the desktop. Using the folder tree in this application, open the directory where the desired object (file or folder) is stored.
Step 5
Create a desktop shortcut for it in one of two ways. You can do this by right-clicking the object and selecting Desktop (Create Shortcut) under Submit. Or you can just drag it to the desktop with the right mouse button. When you release the button, a small menu will appear on the screen, in which select "Create shortcuts".
Step 6
Use the drag-and-drop operation and to create copies of shortcuts from the main menu of the operating system. In this case, you can use both the left and right mouse buttons - in the first case, the context menu will not appear when you release the button.
Step 7
To display the shortcuts of system components ("Recycle Bin", "Computer", "Network", etc.), use a special OS dialog. In Windows 7 and Vista it is easiest to start it through the search mechanism - open the main menu and type in the field with the phrase "Find programs and files" the text "working". This will be enough for the desired "Display or hide normal icons on the desktop" to appear in the list of links to the search results - click on it. In the window that opens, check the checkboxes of those components that need to be displayed on the desktop and click the OK button.
