The Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet editor is the most widely used spreadsheet tool. Entering data into the cells of the tables it creates can be carried out both by typing from the keyboard, and by copying from some external sources and pasting into sheets of Excel documents. The latter method can be applied not only to numeric data, but also to plain text.

Tabular editor Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or 2010

Instructions

Step 1

To paste the text copied to the clipboard into an empty Excel workbook, open the main menu in the editor and in the "Create" section select the "New book" icon. The main menu in Excel 2007 is opened by clicking the round Office button in the upper left corner of the window, and in 2010 it is replaced by a green rectangular button labeled File. If the spreadsheet editor is not already open, start it and a new workbook will be created automatically.

Step 2

If the snippet copied to the clipboard is plain text and not text formatted data, just press Ctrl + V and the operation will be completed. However, keep in mind that all tabs found during the insertion process will be treated by Excel as column delimiters and will place the next text fragment in the next cell of the row. Carriage return characters will be treated as line separators. If this interference of the spreadsheet editor in the formatting does not suit you, use the paste method from the next step.

Step 3

Turn on the cell editing mode - press the "hotkey" F2, or double-click the left mouse button on the required cell. Then, as in the previous step, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V to paste the contents of the clipboard. This method is also convenient for copying text into a cell of an existing table - as a result of such an operation, the formatting of the changed row and column will not be violated.

Step 4

If the copied fragment in text format contains some data, separated by tabs or other separators, use the "Text Import Wizard". Expand the drop-down list by clicking on the "Paste" button on the "Home" tab in the "Clipboard" command group and select the line with the name of this wizard.

Step 5

Follow the instructions - you will be prompted to choose different options for extracting data from the text, and the consequences of your choice can be seen in the table in the same wizard window even before you click the button to go to the next stage.
