There are situations when the desktop disappears. Only one-color (black, blue, etc.) background and cursor are visible on the screen, but shortcuts, start button, taskbar, running programs are not. You don't have to restart your computer to get Windows back to normal, just a few simple steps.
Instructions
Step 1
The missing desktop means that for some reason (operating system error / error of one of the applications / virus / user actions) the explorer.exe process was stopped - the explorer that provides the process of user interaction with Windows. First, press the key combination Ctrl + alt="Image" + Del.
Step 2
In the window that opens, select the "Task Manager" item to launch it.
Step 3
Click the "Details" button in the lower left corner. If there is a "Less" button in the lower left corner, then go to the next step.
Step 4
In the main menu of the Task Manager, select the "File" item and the "Run new task" sub-item. This option allows you to launch any application from your computer, open any file and restore the missing desktop.
Step 5
In the window that opens, type the text explorer.exe and click the "Ok" button. An alternative is to manually locate explorer.exe in the C: / Windows folder using the Browse button. "C" is the logical drive on which the Windows operating system is located, the drive letter may be different on your computer. You can find out the correct drive in the This PC window in Windows 10 (or My Computer in previous versions of the system). The logical drive containing the operating system is marked with the Windows logo and the word "Windows".
Step 6
The desktop returns to its usual state. All shortcuts, running programs will become available, since the problem was only in the display of information, and not in a serious failure of the operating system.
