The disappearance of desktop icons can be caused by several reasons. Restoration of shortcuts can be carried out by the user using standard Windows OS tools without involving additional software.
Instructions
Step 1
Call the desktop context menu by clicking the right mouse button and select the "Arrange icons" command. Use the Show Desktop Icons subcommand.
Step 2
Call the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button, if the shortcuts cannot be displayed and go to the "Control Panel" item. Expand the "Folder Options" link and go to the "Fork" tab in the dialog box that opens. Apply the checkbox in the line "Show hidden files and folders" and confirm the saving of the changes made by clicking the OK button.
Step 3
Bring back the desktop shortcuts and folders by removing the Hidden attribute from them. To do this, return to the main Start menu and go to the Run dialog. Type cmd in the "Open" line and confirm the launch of the command line utility by clicking OK. Enter attrib / D / S -h "% allusersreofile% / Desktop / *" in the command interpreter text box to remove the Hidden attribute from shared desktop files and icons, and confirm the selected action by pressing the Enter function key …
Step 4
Use the syntax attrib / D / S -h "% userprofile% / Desktop / *" to remove the hidden attribute from the user's desktop icons and confirm the save by pressing the Enter function key. Use the F5 key to update the shortcuts.
Step 5
Call the context menu of the desktop again by clicking the right mouse button and select the item "Display Properties". Select the "Desktop" option and go to the "Customize Desktop" section. Make sure that the box next to "Clean up my desktop every 60 days" is unchecked, and if necessary, return the desired icons from this folder.
Step 6
Open the trash can and restore accidentally deleted desktop shortcuts if necessary.
