The My Computer icon (system name This Computer) gives the user access to local drives, USB, CD / DVD and other removable and built-in media. Although this is one of the most commonly used shortcuts in Windows, it is not displayed on the system screen by default.
Why did the My Computer icon disappear?
In the Windows XP version, Microsoft added a link to "My Computer" in the Start menu. As a result, users received two shortcuts to access their files and folders through "My Computer": one on the desktop, the other in the "Start" menu.
Starting with the version of Windows Vista, Microsoft began work on "clearing" the desktop and system from unnecessary elements. Therefore, in the eighth version, not only did the shortcut to the computer disappear, but also the Start menu itself was gone. Nevertheless, by popular demand, the start menu reappeared in version 10 of the system, but the computer icon did not appear either on the work screen or in the start menu. However, the shortcut is still the most used icon in Windows today.
There are two ways to display the This PC shortcut, commonly referred to as My Computer, on the Windows 10 desktop. The first method is a simple "drag and drop" shortcut to the home screen, for the second method you need to go to the system settings.
Displaying the icon using drag and drop
- Open any folder on your computer. You can even open the trash can - the folder itself is not important.
-
Look in the sidebar for the icon labeled "This PC."
- Click on it and navigate to your computer folder.
- Shrink the explorer window by clicking on the middle icon in the upper right corner of the folder window so that the computer's working screen becomes visible.
-
Grab and hold the This PC icon with the left mouse button.
- In this way, drag the icon onto the computer's working screen.
Ready. The computer folder shortcut has now appeared on the desktop.
Displaying the icon using system settings
- Right-click on an empty spot on your computer's work screen.
-
In the pop-up menu, select the "Personalization" item.
-
If you have the latest version of Windows 10, select Themes, then look for the line "Desktop Icon Settings."
-
In the window that opens, check the box next to the "Computer" item.
- Save the settings and close the window.
Fixing the icon in the start menu
If it is more convenient for you to open folders from the system start menu, then you can pin the computer icon there. This can be done as follows:
-
Click on the "This PC" icon with the right mouse button;
- Select "Pin to home screen";
- Open the start menu - the shortcut "This computer" is now attached to the right section.
By default, the shortcut is named This PC. If you want to rename it to "my computer", double-click on the name with the left mouse button and enter the desired name.
