Instructions

Step 1

To rename the shortcut "My Computer", move the cursor to its icon and right-click. In the context menu, select the Rename command. The field with the name will become available for editing, you will understand this by its changed appearance. Enter a new name for the shortcut and left-click anywhere on the desktop. Renaming the shortcut "My Computer" will not affect the operation of the system in any way.

Step 2

If you want to change the appearance of the "My Computer" icon itself, you need to turn to the "Display" component. To do this, right-click in the area of the desktop, free of files and folders. In the drop-down menu, select the last item "Properties". Alternatively, open the Control Panel from the Start menu. In the "Appearance and Themes" category, left-click on the "Display" icon.

Step 3

A new "Display Properties" dialog box will open. There are several ways to change the appearance of shortcuts. The first method allows one command to change the icons of all the main elements of the desktop ("Trash", "Network Neighborhood", "My Documents"), and not just the shortcut "My Computer". This will also change the appearance of the windows and wallpaper. To use this method, go to the "Themes" tab and select a new design in the "Theme" group using the drop-down list. Apply the new settings.

Step 4

The second method involves choosing icons for desktop elements yourself. Open the "Desktop" tab and click on the "Customize Desktop" button at the bottom of the window. An additional "Desktop Elements" dialog box will open, go to the "General" tab. In the center of the window, you will see the icons of the main elements of the desktop. Select the "My Computer" icon with the mouse and click on the "Change Icon" button. In the new "Change Icon" window, you can choose a new icon from the available thumbnails.

Step 5

If you did not find a suitable icon among the standard samples, indicate the path to the icon that you drew or downloaded from the Internet. To do this, click on the "Browse" button and select the directory where the icon you need is saved. After that click on the OK button, apply the new settings and close the "Properties: Display" window.
