To play MP4 in the installed Windows system, you must first install special multimedia codecs and programs for playing video files that can play this video format.

Step 1
To download the required codec, open your browser and go to the official website of the K-Lite codec pack. In the list of download options, select the one that suits you best and click Download.

To play MP4 and other most common files, you only need to install the Basic version of the codec. It has the smallest volume and includes the minimum number of settings, which will allow a novice user to install as quickly as possible. The Standart, Full and Mega packages include additional programs that are often not needed by an ordinary PC user.

After the download is complete, open the resulting file and complete the installation in accordance with the instructions that appear on the screen. After installation, it is advisable to restart your computer to apply the changes.

Double click on the MP4 file you want to play. This will open a standard Windows Media Player window. If playback starts, then the installation was successful.

You can also choose an alternative player that is installed along with the codec pack. To do this, right-click on the file you want to play, then select "Open with" - Media Player Classic. The program allows you to select subtitles, work with audio tracks and has more functionality.

To play MP4, you can use the players, which can also be downloaded from the Internet. For example, the VLC player supports a large number of files and itself has built-in codecs that do not require installation of additional files. You can download VLC from the official website of the program.

After downloading the installer file, launch it and follow the installation instructions. After completing the procedure, right-click on the file to play and select "Open with". Click on it and select VLC Media Player from the list that appears. The selected file starts playing.
