Let's look at this procedure using the example of creating such a popular nowadays picture format - an avatar.

Step 1
An avatar is a small square image that represents you on forums, social networks, and a variety of websites. As a rule, its size does not exceed 150x150 px. Create a new document in Photoshop and when creating it, specify the dimensions - for example, 120 by 120 pixels. Resolution can be small, and the color scheme must be RGB.
Step 2
After you have created a blank document of the desired size, open the photo or drawing from which you want to make an avatar. Crop at least approximately the uploaded picture, crop it to the fragment you want to see on the avatar using the Crop tool. Then duplicate the cropped image layer and drag the copy onto the avatar preset.
Step 3
Now your task is to resize the image to the final size of the avatar (for example, if your drawing is 500 by 500 pixels, you need to reduce it to 120 by 120 so that it fully fits into the desired format. Open the Edit menu and click Free Transform. The screen will appear icons resizing and resizing the image. Hold down the Shift key, it will allow you to resize the picture without breaking the original proportions. Without releasing it, start reducing the photo to the size of the avatar picture.
Step 4
When you are satisfied with the result, press Enter, which will confirm the transformation, and then save the picture to your computer using the File> Save for Web command. Choose jpeg format and maximum quality. Your new picture is ready.
