Today in Windows XP there are two main ways to format hard drives from a running system - fast and deep. Of course, each of the methods has certain pros and cons, which we will talk about.

Step 1

Formatting hard drives. The operation is performed as follows. First, you need to open the "My Computer" folder. Next, you should select the disk that you want to format and click on its shortcut with the right mouse button. In the menu that appears, select Formatting. A window will appear in front of you where you have to select the type of formatting: fast (clearing the table of contents), or using compression. There is also deep formatting - it is performed if you do not check any items in the window that opens. Let's talk more about formatting methods.

Step 2

Fast formatting. This operation removes all data from the hard disk superficially. That is, all data becomes invisible to the user, however, it is saved in the system registry, thanks to which, using special programs, it can always be restored. The entire formatting operation takes less than ten seconds.

Step 3

Formatting using compression. If, when formatting a hard disk, you select the "Use compression" option, then all data written to the hard drive will automatically go through the compression procedure. This method is possible with both fast and deep formatting.

Step 4

Deep formatting. You can format the hard disk in this way without checking the "Quick Format" item. In this case, the whole operation takes a long time, the total time will depend on the size of the hard disk. After deep formatting, it is almost impossible to recover anything from the deleted data, in contrast to quick formatting.
