A modern computer mouse is a fairly reliable device that can work reliably for many years. Nevertheless, sometimes it also has malfunctions. Instead of going to the store for a new mouse, you should try to repair the old one.

Instructions
Step 1
The most common reason for the inoperability of a mouse is a wire break at the point where it exits the case. This malfunction usually manifests itself in users who actively use the mouse, for example, gamers or specialists using graphics programs. The failure of the mouse can lead not only to its failure, but also to shutdown the computer. The latter occurs in the event of a short circuit of the broken wires, which leads to the operation of the protection in the power supply.
Step 2
Start repairing the mouse by disassembling it, for this it is enough to unscrew one or two screws on the bottom surface of the case. Having disassembled the mouse, see where the wires entering it are connected. Then cut the mouse cord 3-5 cm above the break.
Step 3
Gently strip the ends of the wires about 5 mm. You can also remove the insulation with a soldering iron tip. Tin the conductors. Now, in turn, unsolder the pieces of wires going to the board and solder the wires of the cable of the same color instead. This option will help not to confuse them. Work very carefully, use a thin tip soldering iron with no more than 40 watts.
Step 4
If you do not have a soldering iron, you can restore normal mouse operation by cutting out the damaged section of the wire and twisting the ends of the wires together. Insulate the joints with electrical tape. Alternatively, you can use pieces of pre-wired cambric for insulation. After twisting the wires, slide the cambric into place.
Step 5
Reassemble the mouse. When assembling, do not put much effort: if something does not work out, just check that all the parts are correctly mated. If you have a USB mouse, you can plug it into a running computer. When using a PS / 2 mouse, connect it only to a powered off device. A correctly repaired mouse will faithfully serve you for more than one year.
Step 6
Sometimes in the mouse this or that button fails. The solution in this case is one - to replace the microswitch responsible for the operation of this button. You can take it from your old mouse or use one of the additional buttons, if your mouse has them. Many users never use the extra buttons usually meant for gamers. Put a microswitch from it instead of the spoiled one. To do this, carefully solder the old one, clean the holes in the board with a steel needle. Put the new switch in place and solder the contacts.
Step 7
It so happens that the microswitch turns out to be working properly, but when assembling the mouse, the button does not work. The reason in this case may be the erased protrusion on it - the place that presses on the switch. Restore the erased area by applying a piece of plastic with a soldering iron and cutting it with a file.
