It is customary to call "sound" files of different formats containing information necessary for programs to reproduce individual sounds or entire pieces of music. Their content can be edited and listened to - each of these actions requires an operation often referred to as "opening a file." Despite the same operation name in both cases, it is implemented using different programs.
Instructions
Step 1
If you need to open a sound file for playback, then use any audio player. This is a program that provides the user with an interface for controlling the operation of playing sounds and musical compositions read from files. By default, one of these applications is installed on the computer along with the installation of the operating system. Therefore, to play audio files of many formats, a double-click is enough - the OS will recognize the format and transfer it for playback to such a program. However, there are quite a lot of standards for storing sounds, and not all of them, for technical or commercial reasons, can be played by the default audio player.
Step 2
Find information on the Internet about which application can open your sound file for playback, if a standard player cannot do this. To do this, use the file extension - enter it into any search engine along with the word "format". You can also use specialized sites in the search - for example, filetypes.ru, open-file.ru and others. Then install the appropriate audio player. There are applications of this kind, which are not made by the authors of the operating systems - such players, as a rule, support many more sound formats, as they are free from much of the commercial restrictions. An example of such a universal player is The KMPlayer (thekmplayer.ru).
Step 3
If you need to open an audio file to make changes to it, then audio players will not help with this - you need an audio editor program. For example, it can be Free Audio Editor, Audacity, an editor from the popular Nero Burning ROM software package, and others. Whichever editor you choose, the file open dialog in it will be invoked by pressing the Ctrl + O keyboard shortcut or by selecting the appropriate item in the application menu.
