A USB hub is a device that allows you to simultaneously connect several devices to one port of this standard. Although such a hub is inexpensive, there is a way to get it for almost nothing.

Instructions

Step 1

Visit any workshop that repairs computer monitors. Ask for the built-in USB hub board from the faulty monitor there. In fact, such a board is a ready-made hub, only without a case. Even if the monitor completely fails, the hub board is usually not affected by the malfunction in any way.

Step 2

Purchase a cable that has a regular USB plug on one side, designed to connect to the computer's motherboard, and on the other, a square USB plug designed to connect to a scanner or printer.

Step 3

Find the contacts on the hub board that are designed for connecting an external power supply. Take a power supply from the Play Station Portable or similar stabilized with an output voltage of 5 V, designed for a maximum current of 2 A. Connect it to the corresponding pins of the board, observing the polarity.

Step 4

Try to find contact pads on the board for soldering the LED. If they are, solder the LED of the desired color into the board, observing the polarity. Sometimes there is no resistor for the LED - then solder it too. The resistance of this resistor should be close to one kilo-ohm.

Step 5

Install the board into any suitable plastic enclosure. Cut out the holes for the connectors and the LED in it in advance. Attach the board to the case using its mounting holes. To do this, use screws, nuts and stands made from old fountain pens.

Step 6

Connect the assembled hub with a cable to the computer. Plug in the power supply. Start using the device. In no case, do not simultaneously connect devices to it, the total consumption of which (not even continuous, but only starting) exceeds that for which the power supply is designed. In all cases, do not even try to remove more than 500 mA from one socket of the hub even for a short time.
