Scrolls of various shapes and sizes are often used as backgrounds for inscriptions and images in collages. To create such a background using Photoshop, you will need to draw the texture of the material and apply a gradient to simulate the volume of the twisted part of the scroll.
Instructions
Step 1
Using the New option on the File menu, create a new document slightly larger than the scroll you are about to draw. Select RGB as the color mode for your document, and leave the background transparent.
Step 2
For the main color, choose a shade that will be used to fill in the highlights of the scroll. The background color should match the color of the dark parts of the picture.
Step 3
Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, select a rectangular area corresponding to the size of the future scroll. Fill the rectangle with color using the Paint Bucket Tool.
Step 4
Add texture to the resulting leaf. To do this, use the Clouds option in the Render group of the Filter menu. As a result, the sheet will be covered with spots of arbitrary shape. To simulate the rough surface of the material, use the Lighting Effects option from the same filter group.
Step 5
To get an uneven surface, you will need to slightly change the default filter settings. Using the mouse, rotate the light source so that the entire sheet is illuminated. If one of its sides is overexposed, decrease the value of the Intensity parameter. In the Texture Channel field, select one of the color channels from the drop-down list: red, green or blue. The texture will become embossed when you select any channel. After applying the filter, deselect the selection by pressing Ctrl + D.
Step 6
If necessary, you can make the edges of the scroll uneven. To do this, use the Lasso tool to create a freeform selection along the long edges of the sheet so that after deleting the selection, the edge of the sheet becomes uneven.
Step 7
Turn on the Polygonal Lasso tool and select the sections of the leaf that will be collapsed. Copy these areas to new layers using the Layer via Copy option of the New group of the Layer menu. Slightly increase the width of these fragments using the Free Transform option of the Edit menu so that they are wider than the folded sheet. Round the sharp corners of the copied parts by erasing the excess with the Erazer Tool.
Step 8
Duplicate the processed layers and select the areas of the image that are on them using the Load Selection option of the Select menu. Use the Gradient tool to fill the selected areas with a gradient. To do this, in the palette swatches of gradients, which opens after clicking on the gradient bar under the main menu, select a black and white gradient. Click on the Reflected gradient button, which can also be found under the main menu. Fill the selection with a gradient so that the light stripe is parallel to one of the long edges of the filled area.
Step 9
Change the blending mode of the gradient layer from Normal to Multiply by choosing this item from the list in the layers palette. If the curled parts of the scroll are too dark, make the gradient layer more transparent by lowering the value of the Opacity parameter. Merge the processed image with the content of the layer below it using the Merge Down option of the Layer menu.
Step 10
In order to draw the inner part of the curled scroll, create a copy of the collapsed fragment layer and reduce its size. In the layers palette, drag the reduced area under the layer with the collapsed fragment. Use the Move Tool to move the thumbnail image so that its edge looks out of the collapsed part of the scroll.
Step 11
Use the Save or Save As option on the File menu to save the resulting image to a psd or png file. This will allow you to leave the scroll at your disposal on a transparent background. By saving the image in.jpg"
