In modern operating systems, a special directory is used for official use - the temp folder. This is an abbreviation for "Temporary", which reflects the essence of this folder. Program installation files, operating information, partially unzipped compressed folders are all stored in temp. And for each user of the system, this directory is separate. In addition, there is a system-wide temporary data folder that is common to all accounts. If you want, you can change the location of these folders, for example, when there is little free space on the logical drive with Windows.
Instructions
Step 1
Create a folder named Temp where you would like it to be. For example, open the D: drive and right-click on an empty space. Select the "New" item from the context menu, move the mouse pointer over the drop-down line "Folder". Type in Latin characters the name for it - Temp. This is a prerequisite for the correct operation of all programs.
Step 2
Open the start menu if you are using WINDOWS XP. Select "Settings" and left-click on the line "Control Panel". Find the inscription "System" and click it. If you are seeing customization categories rather than icons, select the Performance and Maintenance link. A detailed page will open, where you will see the desired icon.
Step 3
Select the Advanced tab with the mouse pointer, then click the Environment Variables button at the bottom center of the window. An area divided into two parts will appear on the screen. The paths are indicated at the top, i.e. the location of the user temp and tmp variables that populate your user's temp folder. At the bottom of the window, if you use the scroll bar, you will see the addresses for common system variables, that is, the sources of filling the temp service directory.
Step 4
Highlight the line temp in the upper half of the window with a single press and press the "Change" button. A window will open with the title "Modifying a User Variable" and with two fields: the name of the variable and its address, that is, the location. Enter the path to the folder created in step 1, for example, D: Temp and click OK. Now repeat the same with the second line. Now your user's temporary data will be saved to the specified address.
Step 5
Scroll through the list of system variables in the lower half of the window. Highlight the line that says TEMP C: WINDOWSTemp, and click the "Change" button. The "Change system variable" dialog will open, which also has two lines. Enter the path to the Temp folder you created again and confirm your choice by clicking OK. Repeat this operation for the tmp variable.
Step 6
Click OK at the bottom of the window and OK again to close the System Properties screen. Reboot your computer. Temp folder placement is complete.
Step 7
If you are using WINDOWS 7 or Vista, open the Start menu located in the lower left corner of your screen. Double-click the System icon, or select the System and Security link if you are using a Category View. When a screen opens with a list of possible operations, left-click on the inscription "System". Either way, a general computer information page will open. In the left column, find the link "Advanced system settings" and click it.
Step 8
Click the "Environment Variables" button and you will see a window for changing user and service variables. Then proceed as described in points 4, 5, 6 of this manual.
