Since the mid-1990s, with the growth of broadband Internet access, equipping computers and laptops with routers (routers) has become widespread. The router sets up an internal network in your home or office and acts as a "bridge" to the Internet, giving you access to e-mail, web pages, and other resources. The router connects to the PC using a network card that converts data on the network. The router assigns to each of your PCs an Internet Protocol address, an identifier that allows you to connect machines to send and receive information to each other.

Most modern smartphones and tablet PCs are pre-equipped with Wi-Fi technology, which allows them to be used on home and public networks. A special utility is used to connect such devices to the router. When you see your own network listed, select it and enter your router password.

Many home entertainment devices such as Blu-ray and set-top boxes are equipped with Wi-Fi, giving devices access to services such as gaming sites, Pandora, and Netflix. Router-compatible entertainment devices include the Roku, Apple TV, and Xbox. Connecting them to the network is similar to mobile devices: select the list of available Wi-Fi networks, log in.

Laser printers have long supported Ethernet connectivity; more recently, Wi-Fi enabled inkjet models have become available for use at home and in the office. When connected to a router, multiple users can use these printers from desktop PCs, laptops, or mobile devices. Later versions support both wired and wireless connections.

In recent years, refrigerators, washers and dryers and other household appliances have also been equipped with Wi-Fi technology. With the help of a router, they receive an IP address and become part of the local network.
