USB was conceived as a universal port, and it is today. Through it, you can connect the most diverse and demanded equipment: a printer, scanner, camera, USB flash drive, webcam and much more. No matter how modern the computer is, often the user simply does not have enough USB ports. You have to disconnect some device in order to connect the one that you need at the moment. This is extremely inconvenient, so the user is often faced with the task of expanding the number of available USB ports.

Step 1
Connecting extension cords and USB hubs. If you are missing the ports on the front of your computer, insert a USB extension cable (USB type A-B cable) into the USB port on the back of the system unit and lead it to the front of the computer case. If you need to connect more than one device, you can connect a dedicated USB hub. The difference from an extension cord is that at the end it has not one, but several ports. Typically, a hub supports two or four ports. According to the standard, one hub can support up to 4 devices.
Step 2
Installing a PCI USB controller. There are times when you need to increase the number of ports on the back of the system unit. In this case, you must have minimal experience in assembling computers. Any motherboard has PCI slots. Install a USB controller in the PCI slot to expand the number of ports. This is a small expansion board that typically has four USB ports. Usually modern operating systems (Windows XP / Vista / Seven) have all the necessary drivers and installation of additional programs / drivers for this equipment is not required.
Step 3
There are still few ports … If you need to expand the number of ports even more, connect another one in parallel to the existing hub. In total, the USB bus specification provides support for up to 127 devices. Theoretically, by connecting hubs in parallel and adding additional USB controllers, you can expand the number of ports to 127. This number should be more than enough for any, even the most demanding user.
