In a short time, the Internet has gone through several significant eras, each time significantly changing the views on the forms of organization and presentation of content. Static highly specialized sites have been replaced by portals, often replete with heterogeneous information. Then blogs appeared, which are conceptually author's projects. Social networks, having gained wild popularity, have become the embodiment of the ideal of a meta-portal, symbiotically fused with the forum. And today there is no longer any need to puzzle over the choice of an engine for a reference resource. It is much easier to create an electronic encyclopedia.

Instructions
Step 1
Choose a content management system on the basis of which the electronic encyclopedia will function. If desired, in this capacity, you can use flexible general purpose CMS, such as Drupal. However, this is far from always convenient.
Better to give preference to specialized wiki engines such as MediaWiki (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki), Open-Site Code (https://open-site.org/code/) or DokuWiki (https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki). In this case, sacrificing flexibility and versatility, you acquire advanced functionality (wiki markup, tracking the history of edits, setting rights to edit documents), focused specifically on working within encyclopedic resources.
Step 2
Download the distribution kit of the selected CMS from the developer's site. Please check the available versions before downloading. You should not try to get the latest build, as these are often alpha, beta, or release candidates (marked with RC signatures, release candidate). Prefer the most recent but stable distribution (usually marked as stable). Save the distribution package file to the computer disk.
Step 3
Check out the available documentation for installing the encyclopedia engine. Usually, the necessary instructions are contained in text files located in the root directory of the CMS distribution. There you can also find links to more detailed instructions located in other documents or on the developer's site.
Step 4
Install the CMS on the server. Unpack the distribution files to a folder on your local media. Upload them to the server using an FTP client program. Prepare for installation. Follow the instructions in the documentation. As a rule, for a wiki-CMS, you need to create a database and change the access rights to some files and folders (at least those into which custom images will be loaded). Proceed with the installation by running the installation script.
Step 5
Check out the guides for using and administering your CMS. Often, basic information on these issues is contained in the online help. However, much more detailed information can be obtained from the documentation located on the developer's site, as well as on the forums of the user communities of this type of CMS.
Step 6
Start filling the encyclopedia. Write the first articles and post them on the site. Add pages with information about the encyclopedia itself, the sections of knowledge it is devoted to, the policy of creating and distributing its materials. Place links to this information on the main page of the encyclopedia site.
Step 7
Promote the encyclopedia. Engage interested users to share it.
