Many devices are connected to a computer by connecting them to the com-port on the motherboard. These can be phones, printers, scanners, cameras, and more. Com is an abbreviation for communications port.
Instructions
Step 1
To find the com port on your computer, rotate it and look for the large connectors on the back of the motherboard. They may be slightly larger than a USB port in size, but there are also huge multi-pin connectors. Basically, they were relevant for equipment from earlier years of release, so many modern motherboard models no longer support connections via this interface.
Step 2
If you want to connect any device to the serial communication port of your computer, make sure that the drivers are installed on it, since, unlike the usual USB, the com port works mainly with the installed equipment.
Step 3
Connect the equipment with a special cable, fix its position in the computer with special screws, otherwise it will fall out or work slowly and with malfunctions. If necessary, reboot the system, as this is required in some cases for better recognition of the connected device.
Step 4
For correct operation, configure the default connector for the device in the driver program of the installed equipment. Now the com port is already an outdated interface, it rarely finds use in everyday tasks performed on a computer and is mainly needed only in some highly specialized areas. It is not as easy to use as the USB interface, for its correct operation it is necessary to monitor the condition of the cables in the motherboard, and the data exchange rate is low. It also rarely supports charging devices connected to it.
Step 5
If you do not have a com port on your computer, and this is a necessary condition for performing a particular task, use specially designed emulator programs that you can find and download on the Internet.
